Objectives: In the healthcare settings, ageism experienced by the older adults has a negative impact on unmet healthcare needs. Therefore, this study aims to suggest policy alternatives to resolve the unmet healthcare needs of the older adults by analyzing the relation of ageism on experience of unmet healthcare needs and the reasons by gender.
Methods: 9,930 older adults over 65 years old who responded to 2020 National Survey of Older Koreans from the Ministry of Health and Welfare were included in the analyses. Gender-stratified logistic regression analyses were conducted after controlling demographic and sociological factors.
Results: The results showed that female and male older adults tend to report higher likelihood of unmet healthcare needs as they experienced ageism in the healthcare settings(OR=2.10, 95%CI: 1.43-3.10; OR=2.84, 95%CI: 1.75-4.62). Regarding the reasons for unmet healthcare needs, female older adults who experienced ageism had more approachability- and availability-related unmet healthcare needs(OR=3.90, 95%CI: 1.99-7.64; OR=2.23, 95%CI: 1.11-4.48). In addition, male older adults who experienced ageism had higher likelihood of approachability- and availability-related unmet healthcare needs(OR=2.99, 95%CI: 1.35-6.62; OR=7.83, 95%CI: 2.90-21.17).
Conclusions: To resolve the older adults¡¯ experience of unmet healthcare needs, an ageism-based education curriculum should be required for the healthcare staffs to reduce ageism in the healthcare settings, and ageism needs to be considered as a risk factor associated with experience of unmet healthcare needs among older adults.
